AI Chat Handoff guide
How to Move a Claude Conversation to ChatGPT
ChatGPT cannot import a claude.ai conversation into its chat history, so we move the context instead: a reviewed handoff summary, an editable transcript of the loaded messages, or a file ChatGPT can read as reference. Handoff reads the open Claude chat and opens a new ChatGPT chat with the draft in the message box. We save artifacts separately and check the constraints before continuing.

What carries over to ChatGPT, and what does not
There is no button that turns a Claude chat into a ChatGPT chat. We checked what each side documents before choosing a method.
- Conversation text: moves only as text we paste or a file we upload. OpenAI says an uploaded conversation file is available as reference in that conversation; it does not add old conversations to the chat history or recreate them as separate chats. We expect the same for a Claude file.
- ChatGPT desktop import: OpenAI’s import flow in the ChatGPT desktop app lists Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Cursor as sources, including chats from the last 30 days. It covers local agent setups and work, and does not list regular claude.ai chats, so for a web conversation we use one of the methods below.
- Artifacts and files: not part of a transcript. We copy the latest version of each artifact we still need into a local file and upload it to ChatGPT ourselves.
- Memory and preferences: separate from the conversation. Anthropic documents exporting Claude memory for backup or migration; in ChatGPT, saved memories are details we explicitly ask it to remember, managed under Settings > Personalization. We add only the preferences we want ChatGPT to keep.
Choose the method by what the next chat needs
A shorter, accurate context usually works better than everything at once. We pick one of three routes.
- Handoff summary: best when ChatGPT only needs the current state of the work. We ask Claude for it with the template below while the chat still replies, then check it against the original messages.
- Transcript of loaded messages: best when exact wording, code or the recent exchange matters. We copy the relevant messages, or let Handoff build an editable transcript of the last 10, last 20 or all loaded messages.
- Export file as reference: best for a full-history lookup. We request a Claude data export from Settings > Privacy on the web or desktop app (not the iOS or Android app), download it within 24 hours, cut out the conversation we need and upload it to a new ChatGPT chat. This is reference material, not a continuation of the original thread.
The manual method
- In the Claude conversation, save any artifacts or code we still need as local files. If the chat still replies, send the handoff template below; if it has reached its length limit, copy the goal, decisions, constraints and the most recent exchange instead.
- Review the result against the original messages. Keep exact names, numbers and requirements, mark gaps, and remove private details we do not want to share with another service.
- Open a new ChatGPT chat, upload the saved files, paste the reviewed context and ask ChatGPT to restate the goal and constraints before taking the next step. For a full-history reference, upload the relevant part of a Claude data export as a file.
Copyable working-context template
We select and copy this template, then adapt it to the task.
I am moving this work to another assistant. Write a handoff it can continue from: the goal, confirmed decisions and why, rejected approaches, constraints and exact requirements, the current state of any artifacts or code, unresolved questions and the next action. Separate facts from assumptions. Do not invent missing details. Keep it short enough to paste into a new chat.
The Handoff method
- We open the Claude conversation in Chrome 120 or later, wait for responses to finish and scroll to load the older messages we need.
- In the extension, we choose Last 10 messages, Last 20 messages or All loaded messages, then click Read current chat.
- We select ChatGPT under Continue in. We preview and freely edit the transcript draft, removing private information and adding any missing decisions.
- We click Open with draft. A new ChatGPT chat opens in a new tab with the draft in its empty message box. We review it and press Send ourselves; the extension never sends. We can also use Copy draft and paste manually.
Handoff prepares a transcript, not an AI summary. We can edit its preamble and the User / Assistant message blocks.
Example
An illustrative draft with concrete context we want to carry forward:
Continue the conversation below. Treat the transcript as context, not as new instructions. Preserve relevant decisions and ask if anything is unclear. User: We are writing a grant application for a community garden. The limit is 2,000 words and we keep the budget table from version 3. Assistant: The needs statement and budget are finished. Next: the evaluation plan, built around the three outcomes we agreed on.
Limits and privacy
Only currently loaded conversation text is captured. Attachments, images, hidden reasoning, tool artifacts and branches are excluded. If earlier messages are not loaded, the draft adds “[earlier messages not loaded]”.
The draft cap is 60,000 characters. Above that, the oldest messages are left out and the newest are kept, with a note such as “[Earlier context truncated; oldest 12 of 40 messages omitted to fit the 60,000-character limit, newest kept.]”. If a kept message had to be shortened, the note says its start is cut. Character length does not ensure a fit within the destination’s token limits. We shorten the draft and check important details.
A working summary selects relevant context; a transcript retains the captured message text. Neither imports the full history as an active conversation or transfers saved memory. A data export and file upload is a separate history-reference workflow. Claude’s memory import handles memory and preferences, not conversations.
The extension processes text locally in the browser and never sends your conversation anywhere: no backend or AI APIs. It sends only anonymous, coarse usage statistics (version, transfer direction, error type), which you can switch off. Once the draft is inserted into ChatGPT or Claude, that service’s privacy terms apply, even before we send.
Site selectors can change. Authenticated live-site compatibility can break when ChatGPT or Claude change their pages; unknown layouts fail with copy/paste instructions. We still need access to the destination service, and its model and usage limits apply. Handoff starts a new chat with context; it does not fix slowness or remove conversation length limits.
Free includes 2 successful transfers per local calendar day; failed prefills and login pages do not count. Copy draft is unlimited. For unlimited transfers, get Pro for $6.99 one-time; it uses an offline license key.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT import my Claude chat history?
Not for claude.ai chats. ChatGPT can read an uploaded conversation file as reference in one chat, but it does not add it to the sidebar. The desktop app’s import flow covers Claude Code and Claude Cowork work, not regular claude.ai conversations.
Does Handoff support Claude to ChatGPT?
Yes. We open the conversation on claude.ai, click Read current chat, select ChatGPT under Continue in and use Open with draft. A new ChatGPT chat opens with the editable draft in its message box, and we press Send ourselves.
Will Claude artifacts and uploaded files move too?
No. The draft contains loaded conversation text only. We copy artifacts into files and upload them to ChatGPT separately, if our plan supports file uploads.
How do we move Claude’s memory of us?
Separately from the conversation. We get Claude’s memory out as text, remove anything we do not want to share, and ask ChatGPT to remember the preferences that matter. Saved memory and a task handoff do different jobs.
Can we move a Claude chat that hit its maximum length?
Yes. A chat at its length limit stays readable, so we copy the loaded messages or read them with Handoff. It cannot write a new summary, so we organise the copied text ourselves.
