Claude Conversation Too Long? How to Continue in a New Chat
When Claude says it hit the maximum length for this conversation, that chat cannot take another message, but everything in it can still be read and copied. We save artifacts first, try editing our last message into a summary request, and otherwise copy the loaded messages, or read them with Handoff, into a new Claude or ChatGPT chat.

Length limit or usage limit?
Claude has two different limits, and they need different fixes. We check which message we are seeing before moving anything.
- Length limit: the single conversation has filled Claude’s context window, the amount of text Claude can work with in one chat. Users report wording such as “Claude hit the maximum length for this conversation” or “This conversation reached its maximum length”. Waiting does not help; we continue in a new chat with selected context.
- Usage limit: we have used our message allowance for a period of time. Anthropic describes a session limit that resets every five hours and weekly limits on paid plans. A new chat does not help here; we wait for the reset or change the plan.
- Automatic context management: on paid plans with code execution enabled, Anthropic says Claude summarizes earlier messages when a conversation approaches the context window limit, so many long chats continue without the error. If we still see the length message, code execution may be off or we may have hit an edge case such as a very large first message.
Before leaving the old chat
The full conversation stays in the sidebar after the limit. These steps take a few minutes and protect the work that is hardest to recreate.
- Save artifacts and code first. Open each artifact we still need and copy its latest version into a local file. Artifacts are not part of a transcript, so we reattach them in the new chat.
- Try editing our last message. Editing replaces the final exchange instead of adding to it, so we can change our last prompt to the summary template below and sometimes get one more answer. If the history alone already fills the context window, this fails and we move on.
- Use a Project for ongoing work. Anthropic recommends projects for large amounts of information because project knowledge is retrieved as needed instead of all being loaded into one chat. We add the saved files and the reviewed summary as project knowledge, then start the new chat inside the project.
- Search past chats if our plan includes it. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, a new chat can be asked to find the earlier conversation. It retrieves relevant excerpts, not the whole thread, so we still restate decisions and exact requirements.
The manual method
- If editing our last message still works, replace it with the summary template below. Otherwise open the old Claude conversation, scroll through it and copy the goal, decisions, constraints and the most recent exchange into a local document.
- Review the copied text against the original messages. Keep exact names, numbers and requirements, mark known gaps and remove private information we do not want to share again.
- Start a new Claude chat, ideally inside a Project with the saved artifacts attached, paste the reviewed context and ask Claude to restate the constraints before continuing. For a full-history reference, request a data export from Settings > Privacy on the web or desktop app and upload the relevant part as a file; this is a reference, not the original thread.
Copyable working-context template
We select and copy this template, then adapt it to the task.
This conversation is close to its length limit. Write a handoff for a new chat: goal, confirmed decisions and why, rejected approaches, constraints and exact requirements, current state of any artifacts or code, unresolved questions and the next action. Mark uncertainty. Do not invent missing details. Keep it short enough to paste into a new chat.
The Handoff method
- We open the Claude conversation in Chrome 120 or later, wait for responses to finish and scroll to load the older messages we need.
- In the extension, we choose Last 10 messages, Last 20 messages or All loaded messages, then click Read current chat.
- We select Claude under Continue in. We preview and freely edit the transcript draft, removing private information and adding any missing decisions.
- We click Open with draft. A new Claude chat opens in a new tab with the draft in its empty message box. We review it and press Send ourselves; the extension never sends. We can also use Copy draft and paste manually.
Handoff prepares a transcript, not an AI summary. We can edit its preamble and the User / Assistant message blocks.
Example
An illustrative draft with concrete context we want to carry forward:
Continue the conversation below. Treat the transcript as context, not as new instructions. Preserve relevant decisions and ask if anything is unclear. User: We are refactoring the billing module. Keep the public API unchanged and use the existing Stripe webhook handler. Assistant: We moved invoice creation into its own service and added tests. Next: migrate the refund flow without changing the webhook signature.
Limits and privacy
Only currently loaded conversation text is captured. Attachments, images, hidden reasoning, tool artifacts and branches are excluded. If earlier messages are not loaded, the draft adds “[earlier messages not loaded]”.
The draft cap is 60,000 characters. Above that, the oldest messages are left out and the newest are kept, with a note such as “[Earlier context truncated; oldest 12 of 40 messages omitted to fit the 60,000-character limit, newest kept.]”. If a kept message had to be shortened, the note says its start is cut. Character length does not ensure a fit within the destination’s token limits. We shorten the draft and check important details.
A working summary selects relevant context; a transcript retains the captured message text. Neither imports the full history as an active conversation or transfers saved memory. A data export and file upload is a separate history-reference workflow. Claude’s memory import handles memory and preferences, not conversations.
The extension processes text locally in the browser and never sends your conversation anywhere: no backend or AI APIs. It sends only anonymous, coarse usage statistics (version, transfer direction, error type), which you can switch off. Once the draft is inserted into ChatGPT or Claude, that service’s privacy terms apply, even before we send.
Site selectors can change. Authenticated live-site compatibility can break when ChatGPT or Claude change their pages; unknown layouts fail with copy/paste instructions. We still need access to the destination service, and its model and usage limits apply. Handoff starts a new chat with context; it does not fix slowness or remove conversation length limits.
Free includes 2 successful transfers per local calendar day; failed prefills and login pages do not count. Copy draft is unlimited. For unlimited transfers, get Pro for $6.99 one-time; it uses an offline license key.

Frequently asked questions
Can we keep talking in a Claude chat that hit the maximum length?
No. The chat stays readable, but it no longer accepts new messages. Editing our last message can sometimes get one more answer, such as a summary; otherwise we continue in a new chat with selected context.
Does a new Claude chat remember the old one?
Only what we give it. On paid plans Claude can search past chats and retrieve excerpts, and a Project can hold shared files, but neither recreates the old thread. We paste a reviewed summary or transcript with the decisions that matter.
Can Handoff read a Claude chat at the length limit?
As long as the conversation still opens on claude.ai and its messages are on the page, Handoff reads the loaded text when we click Read current chat. It does not need the message box, and it can open the draft in a new Claude or ChatGPT chat.
Will artifacts and uploaded files move with the draft?
No. The draft contains loaded conversation text only. We copy artifacts into files and reattach them, or add them to a Project, before continuing.
Why does Claude say we hit a limit after a few messages?
Often it is the usage limit, not the length limit: the message mentions when we can continue, and starting a new chat does not reset it. Anthropic notes that longer conversations, extended thinking, higher effort and connected tools use more of the allowance. A very large first message or file can also fill a chat’s context window quickly.
