WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RECURRING EVENTS WHEN EVENTS CALENDAR PRO EXPIRES

Short answer: according to TEC support, your existing recurring events and Pro features keep working after the license expires. You lose updates, downloads and premium support. The real risk is version drift: once the free The Events Calendar updates and your Pro stays old, warnings appear and Pro features can stop working (TEC forum, 2017, 2018; checked 2 Nov 2026).

What you keep

  • Your existing series and their dates, and the event URLs on your site.
  • Creating new recurring events with the Pro version you have installed, according to a 2018 TEC support reply. We haven't re-tested this on the current Pro version.

These answers come from TEC staff on the support forum. The official knowledge base page they pointed to (“Expired licenses/subscriptions”) no longer exists, and we found no current official doc that says it in one place. Whether the 2026 unified licensing changes this is not verified.

What you lose

  • Automatic updates and downloads. Downloads are only available for active subscriptions (Nexcess).
  • Premium support (Nexcess: renewing an expired license).
  • If an automatic renewal payment fails, Nexcess says license keys are deactivated immediately.

The real risk: version mismatch

The free The Events Calendar keeps updating; an expired Pro doesn't. Nexcess says a mismatch between the two “can trigger the warning … or even cause some premium features to disappear or stop working” (Nexcess). TEC support said the same years ago: the plugins have to be at matching versions (TEC forum). Holding back the free plugin also means holding back its fixes and security patches.

  • Take a full backup before changing anything.
  • Test updates on a staging site first.
  • Don't auto-update the free plugin on a site with a lapsed Pro.

Your options

  • Renew. The simplest, fully supported choice. From November 16, 2026, renewals move to the Nexcess bundle: what changes at your Pro renewal.
  • Let it lapse and pin versions. No cost, but no updates and a slowly growing risk.
  • Free add-on for the free plugin. Bazingaworld adds daily and weekly rules (Bazingaworld).
  • Switch calendar plugin, such as Events Manager, Sugar Calendar or EventKoi. Expect migration work: URLs, templates and event data.
  • SeriesKeeper (beta, our product). Recurring series on the free The Events Calendar, keeping your existing pages and theme. Importing Pro dates is beta: preview and Undo, it imports only future dates Pro already created, and old Pro occurrence URLs are not redirected. Testing with Events Calendar Pro is in progress; we don't claim compatibility yet.

Quick decision checklist

  • Need ticketing, seating or other Pro features? SeriesKeeper isn't for you. Renew or switch.
  • Kept Pro only for recurring events? Any of the last four options can work.
  • Moving events in bulk from a spreadsheet? See importing recurring events from CSV.

Only kept Pro for recurring events?

We're building SeriesKeeper for exactly that: series on the free The Events Calendar, with your existing pages kept. It's a pre-order with delivery by November 15, 2026; see the page for price and pre-sale terms. Pro compatibility testing is in progress.

FAQ

Will my recurring events disappear if Events Calendar Pro expires?

No, according to TEC support. In a 2017 forum reply, TEC staff said existing recurring events keep working as they did before the license expired. We have not re-tested this on the current Pro version.

Can I still create new recurring events after expiry?

According to TEC support (2018), yes, with the Pro version you already have installed. This has not been re-tested on the current Pro version.

Can I update The Events Calendar (free) with an expired Pro?

You can, but a version mismatch between the free plugin and Pro may show a “Please install or upgrade” warning or make Pro features stop working. Nexcess advises renewing or downgrading the free plugin to match Pro.

Can I still download Pro after expiry?

No. According to Nexcess, downloads are only available for active subscriptions.

Is there a free way to get recurring events in The Events Calendar?

Bazingaworld offers a free add-on with daily and weekly rules for the free The Events Calendar, and other calendar plugins have recurrence built in. SeriesKeeper, our own add-on, is a paid pre-order in beta.

Does SeriesKeeper import my Pro events?

Importing the future dates Pro already created is a beta feature, with a preview and Undo. Compatibility testing with Events Calendar Pro is in progress, so we don’t claim it is confirmed.
