Upcoming · Status: Waitlist

WORDPRESS TRANSLATION DROPDOWN, NO MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION (COMING SOON).

SwitchTongue is a planned WordPress plugin: a language dropdown that uses your own Google or DeepL key.

Not built yet. Waitlist only, no payment.

The problem: Google's free website widget and GTranslate's free plan don't allow commercial sites, and paid dropdown plugins cost from $12 a month.

Concept, not built. A drawing of the idea, not a working plugin.

Who it is for

Agencies and freelancers who maintain WordPress sites for business clients, and the business site owners themselves.

In 2020 Google reopened the widget only for government, non-profit and non-commercial sites focused on COVID-19 response; for all other websites it recommends the Cloud Translation API. GTranslate's free version does not allow commercial use either: its terms (section 6.1) say commercial use requires a paid subscription, from $12 a month. The Cloud Translation API itself has no language dropdown.

What it will do

SwitchTongue is planned as a small WordPress plugin that shows a language dropdown (it can use the same #google_translate_element spot), translates page text with your own Google Cloud Translation or DeepL key, and stores every translated string in your WordPress database so each string is translated once. No Tacko servers.

  • Planned: allowed on commercial sites, because you use your own translation key.
  • Planned: a small one-off yearly licence instead of a $12–50 monthly subscription. Price not set yet.
  • Planned: Google or DeepL bills your key directly; Google Cloud Translation includes the first 500,000 characters a month free.
  • Planned: translations stored in your own WordPress database, so repeat page views do not use your quota again.

Honest limitations

  • Not available and not for sale. Waitlist only, with no pre-order.
  • Every feature on this page is planned and may change. Price not set.
  • WordPress only. A dropdown, not a full multilingual-SEO tool.
  • Translation costs depend on your site size and number of languages and are billed to your own key.

Frequently asked questions

Is SwitchTongue available?

No. It is still at the idea and validation stage, with no release date. Join the waitlist to hear if and when it is ready.

Can I pre-order it?

No. SwitchTongue is waitlist only. No payment is taken.

Do I need my own translation key?

Yes, as planned: a Google Cloud Translation or DeepL API key. Google or DeepL bills that key directly.

Is it made by Google?

No. It would be an independent plugin by Tacko, not affiliated with or endorsed by Google, GTranslate or DeepL. Google Translate is a trademark of Google LLC.
